ভাষা ও গদ্যের সৌন্দর্য

ডিউক জনের লেখনশৈলী বেশ আলাদা মনে হয়েছে। সংক্ষিপ্ত বাক্য, চমৎকার উপমা, আর অনুপুঙ্খ বিবরণ বইটিকে স্বতন্ত্র করেছে। শুরুটা একটু ধীরগতির ছিল, কিন্তু ধৈর্য ধরে পড়তে থাকলে গল্পটা একটা নিজস্ব ছন্দ পেয়েছিল। তবে কিছু কিছু জায়গায় অপ্রয়োজনীয় দীর্ঘ বর্ণনা পড়ে মনে হয়েছিল, হয়তো একটু কম হলে ভালো হতো।

প্রত্যাশা বনাম বাস্তবতা

এই বইয়ের সবচেয়ে বড় চমক ছিল প্রচলিত ওয়েস্টার্ন কাঠামো ভেঙে ফেলা। একটা শক্তিশালী দ্বন্দ্ব, নায়ক-ভিলেনের সম্মুখসমর, বা শ্বাসরুদ্ধকর ক্লাইম্যাক্সের প্রত্যাশা করেছিলাম, কিন্তু সেটি ঘটেনি। গল্পটি একটি বাস্তবসম্মত এবং দর্শনধর্মী দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি থেকে এগিয়েছে, যা হয়তো লেখকের ইচ্ছাকৃত সিদ্ধান্ত ছিল। কিন্তু আমি শেষ মুহূর্ত পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করেছিলাম একটা রুদ্ধশ্বাস বন্দুকযুদ্ধের জন্য, যা এল না। ফলে পড়া শেষ হওয়ার পরও একটা অসম্পূর্ণতার অনুভূতি থেকে গিয়েছিল।

আরেকটা ব্যাপার একটু দৃষ্টিকটু লেগেছে—১৮শ শতকের চরিত্রদের মুখে what’s up বা সমসাময়িক কিছু বাক্য! গল্পের আবহ তৈরি করতে হলে সময়োপযোগী সংলাপ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এ ধরনের ছোটখাটো অসঙ্গতি গল্পের গভীরতায় কিছুটা ছেদ ফেলেছে।

শেষ কথা

যদিও এটি আমার প্রথম ওয়েস্টার্ন বই ছিল, তবু বলতেই হয়, অভিজ্ঞতা ভালোই হয়েছে। প্রচলিত ওয়েস্টার্নের তুলনায় এটি আলাদা, ধীর কিন্তু গভীর। ভবিষ্যতে ডিউক জন যদি এই পরীক্ষামূলক ধারাকে ধরে রাখেন, তবে একটু বেশি টানটান উত্তেজনা আর ওয়েস্টার্নের রুক্ষ সৌন্দর্য যোগ করলে এটি আরও বেশি মনে ধরবে।

আমার কাছে সুবর্ণ সমাধি ছিল একটি ভিন্নধর্মী কিন্তু উপভোগ্য পড়া। ঐতিহ্যগত ওয়েস্টার্ন পাঠকরা হয়তো দ্বিধায় পড়বেন, তবে যারা নতুন কিছু খুঁজছেন, তাদের জন্য এটি ভালো একটি অভিজ্ঞতা হতে পারে
